Description
This guided hike follows the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail along one of the Algarve’s most scenic coastal areas. Starting at Praia da Marinha and finishing at Praia de Vale Centeanes, the route covers approximately 6 km on dirt and rocky paths, with some ascents and descents along ravines known as hanging valleys.
Praia da Marinha features distinctive karst formations including arches, caves, and sinkholes created by the interaction of fresh and saltwater. Benagil Beach, once a fishing community, is now famous for boat tours to its sea caves. The walk also passes Praia do Carvalho, accessed through a tunnel carved in Miocene limestone rich with fossilized sea shells.
The surrounding Mediterranean scrub includes the dwarf palm tree, Europe’s only native palm, and bird species like the black-headed warbler. Near the Alfanzina Lighthouse, Aleppo pine forests provide habitat for birds and mammals such as rabbits and foxes. Along the route, local legends add cultural context to the natural landscape.
The tour lasts about 3 hours, is non-circular, and has a maximum group size of 12 people. Return transport from the meeting point is included.
