Markets on the Algarve

Find the best markets, flea markets, car boot sales and farmers markets across the Algarve, where you can find great bargains. A real local experience, popular local markets are fun, noisy and pungent, and a great chance to buy fresh Algarve produce.

Most towns and cities in the Algarve have municipal markets which open from Monday to Saturday and offer a wide range of fresh local produce including fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, olives, cheeses and cured meats. The stallholders are often following a family tradition of selling their fresh produce or the local catch at the market. Many locals prefer to buy their fish and fresh produce from these markets rather than large supermarkets. You pay a little extra, but you will probably get a lot more flavour.

In addition to the daily markets, there are regular pop-up markets, flea markets and farmers markets across the region, where you can buy everything from a live duck to a pair of trainers.

Many markets have stalls and vans selling street food. Portuguese donuts - farturas - are very popular and there's nothing quite like the smell of chicken cooking over charcoal to get your taste buds going!

The majority of markets open early - around 8am to 9am - and vendors start to pack up at about 1pm.
